The Perfect Dinner

Last Sunday evening, as usual, Susan and I sat down and planned dinners for the week. The menu usually revolves around what happens to be on sale or, perhaps, meat or chicken from the freezer. The fare decided on for Wednesday was shrimp and grits, mainly because Kroger's had Gulf (of Mexico) shrimp on sale for $4.99/lb. Susan and I then made our other plans for the week, i.e. testing the limits of marital bonding. The primary goal was to build a large raised garden bed for fresh vegetables. Hey, if we can hang wallpaper together we can build a garden bed!

Yesterday the beds were still up in the air. Would it be masonry or lumber? How big? What shape? Later that evening Susan went to spend a few hours with her mother, Claud, in Athens (GA) and I ventured into Gwinnett County to go grocery shopping with the yuppie crowd . It was a pleasant surprise when Susan returned with home grown goodies from Claud's fabulous "vacant lot" veggie garden.

Today everything came together. We purchased 21 really heavy 6X6X8 landscaping timbers and muscled them from the nursery into my sagging pickup truck, then to the back yard and finally began laying down the first row of the raised beds. This did two things: utterly wore us out and made us extremely hungry.

And here is were everything really came together for the perfect meal. Gulf shrimp; North Georgia grits; Claud's homegrown garlic, onions, and kale; and our own fresh baked bread. It just doesn't get any better!
