Yankee Dust

Yankee Dust - that's what Derek calls it. Thursday night was spent by me "dissing" the poor weathermen and all their hype about the “big” storm that was coming Friday afternoon. After all, a meteorologist's track record isn’t lot to brag about, maybe 50-50 at best. But I was dead wrong and they nailed the prediction. It started snowing around 2PM Friday and by the time the school buses were rolling the "yankee dust" was accumulating on the ground. Now this is a big deal down here in rebel country since road salt and dump trucks are at a premium and snow plows are something most towns only dream of owning. To top it off, many of my southern born friends struggle on snowy and icy roads. I’m just not sure its inexperience or they if attack each drive as if it was the Indy 500.

It was quiet and serene as Susan and I walked around the house and through the neighborhood on Saturday morning. A bright blue sky set off the snow covered trees. Throughout the day I watched the birds cluster around the feeder. Towhees, Juncos, Cardinals and Tufted Titmouses were most prevalent, but we did have a pair of very confused Blue Birds sitting in the branches, wondering where they could get a quick meal.

We ended up with a little over 3 inches of snow. As the day progressed and the temperatures rose into the mid-40's, our little snow was only a memory. Well, a memory for most. A few unfortunate souls, those who own the numerous cars still in the ditches of nearby I-985, must recall enough of las
t night to remember where they left their car!
