It had been a while since Susan had seen her niece and nephew who recently moved from Suriname to Florida, so she called her brother and sister-in-law and convinced them to fly Emily and Henry up to our place for a few days.
While I went to a high school wrestling tournament Susan took them on a tour of the Gwinnett Environmental Center. Later, along with the help of Naomi and Leo, they competed to see who built the best Ginger Bread house.
Hiking in the North Georgia Mountains |
We filled the next day almost totally with a drive to the North Georgia mountains and a 10+ mile day hike on a loop from Amicalola Falls to the Len Foote Hike-Inn (only accessible by foot) and back to the Falls via the Springer Mountain access trail that comes down from the Appalachian Trail's southern terminus. It was a bit chilly when we started but we had warmed by the time we stopped at the Hike-Inn to eat our packed-in lunch. The first mile back was on the colder northern side of a ridge but it soon headed southwest and gave way to gentler climbs and descents.
Soon it was time for Emily and Henry to return to warm and sunny Florida to spend Christmas with their mom and dad, Daven and Helen. We sure hope they come again soon. There were so many more things we wanted to do with them.
Naomi and Louie, and Leo and Tracy, spent time with other relatives but all were present on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought them. I guess they weren't naughty, but were nice, because old Saint Nick didn't fail them. Somehow he found our chimney without being noticed and filled the stocking with goodies for the (overgrown) children. Now it was time to hand out presents. No one was disappointed and the photos show it!
